JUSTIN JORDAN
SEND THIS TO A FRIEND!

DF Interview: Justin Jordan introduces civilization to Spread in new arc … or does he?

By Byron Brewer

Writer Justin Jordan begins a new arc in his continuing Image Comic, Spread, as No & Company discover a location where civilization seems to have survived! Is the seeming safety too good to be true?

We wanted to find out too, so DF tracked down our old pal, the scribe himself, and dug for the 411 you demand. Here is what Justin Jordan told us.

Dynamic Forces: Justin, for the uninitiated (whoever THAT might be, lol), tell us about the concept behind your Spread book from Image Comics.

Justin Jordan: Basically, it’s Lone Wolf and Cub in a world where John Carpenter’s The Thing ate North America. A virulent ecosystem has converted most of North America into more of it, and one lone badass finds a baby who can kill it, if he can keep her alive.

So babies, badasses and monsters.

DF: Would you say your new arc, “Sanctuary,” starting in issue #14 in July would be a good jumping-on place for new readers?

Justin Jordan: Probably! Basically, what you really need to know is in the book itself, so if you’re picking it up for the first time, you shouldn’t have any problem following along with what’s happening.

DF: Still, can you update us on the series with a “The Story So Far” kind of capsulization?

Justin Jordan: Basically, No, a scavenger, found Hope, a baby who can kill the Spread, and is trying to get her somewhere where someone can use her to save the world. In the process, he also collected Molly, a crazy person, and Jack, a very clever cannibal. He was badly wounded in the first arc, and his friends had to take him to a place called Sanctuary to save his life.

DF: So, in the bloody mayhem that is Spread, tell us about “Sanctuary.”

Justin Jordan: Sanctuary is the first real piece of civilization No and company have seen in almost a decade. It’s safe, there’s food, there’s even electricity some times. But No suspects very strongly that this shouldn’t be possible, and that Sanctuary has a dark secret.

DF: Does it feel odd to be working with artist John Bivens and not your ol’ pal, original artist and co-creator Kyle Strahm?

Justin Jordan: It’s not too bad, actually. Fortunately, I’ve known John for ages now. We first worked together back in…..2007? Thereabouts. So I’ve known him for 10-plus years and worked with him almost as long, and immediately prior to this we’d worked together on a pitch, so we’ve got a pretty good groove.

DF: Speaking of Kyle, I understand he has done, starting with #14, a special four-part series of interlocking covers for the series that just kicks ass?

Justin Jordan: Yes sir, and it is awesome. Kyle is still involved in the book, and will be back on art duties down the road, and in the meantime, he’s producing awesome as f*ck covers for the book.

DF: Justin, any other projects you can tell us about current or near-future you are working on?

Justin Jordan: Well, the third and final Strode trade is out on July 6, and then I’ve got Sombra from BOOM starting in July – it’s basically Heart of Darkness in modern cartel Mexico. Then in August, Evil Ernie: Godeater starts up from Dynamite.

Beyond that I’ve got … five other greenlit things? None of which I can talk about. I stay busy.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Justin Jordan for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. A new arc begins in Spread #14 from Image Comics and hits stores July 6th!
