DF Interview: Brian Michael Bendis on Spider-Men II, that ‘other’ Miles, a new Spidey girlfriend and some Friendly Neighborhood Defenders

By Byron Brewer

The moment five years in the making is finally here. The first time Peter Parker and Miles Morales met ended with a question — Who is the Miles Morales of the Marvel Universe?

Now that the Miles you know and love is with Peter in the Marvel Universe, you’re finally going to get that answer to who the OTHER Miles Morales is! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg as Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli bring you the next heart-stopping adventure for both Peter and Miles in the five-part miniseries, Spider-Men II!

Being DF, of course, we wanted to see the remainder of above said iceberg so we tracked down series scribe/MU architect Brian Michael Bendis and this is what he told us of his sequel tale of two web-slingers.

Dynamic Forces: Brian, it only seems like yesterday that Spider-Men came out, but it was in fact 2012. A lot of things have changed, not only for Miles (uh, he’s in a different universe, duh!) but really for Peter as well. Looking back, what was the most significant thing that came out of the original Spider-Men for both of these characters?

Brian Michael Bendis: The biggest surprise for me while creating it and it certainly followed in the reaction to the book was how emotional the series became. How much a simple story about empathy and understanding other people’s perspectives could become so personal. Peter and Miles learned a lot about each other and themselves in that series. As did I.

DF: You and Sara Pichelli created Miles Morales and now both of his creators are back for Spider-Men II. Besides the obvious (rinse, repeat: uh, he’s in a different universe, duh!), what has changed physically, spiritually and emotionally for this young hero in your eyes?

Brian Michael Bendis: Everything. It really is the reason to do the series again. To re-examine the relationship that the men have to each other and the legacy of Spider-Man and having been through so much in such a small period of time there are things about each other they may have liked that now they don’t or things about each other they respected that now they may have a different opinion about. It's an entirely new series in many respects.

DF: Of course the talk on the fan forums and even on the cover of Spider-Men II #1 itself is, who is the OTHER Miles Morales, the true Marvel Universe (are we still using 616?) Miles? Peter was shocked five years ago to see who it was. What if anything can you tell us about this plot point, and what effect could this have on Ultimate / “Real” Miles?

Brian Michael Bendis: I'm mainly so happy that people were so interested in this so many years after the original series. Even as we were preparing the new series in secret I was being inundated on Tumblr about questions about that last page. Some comic book fans do not like dangling plot threads! (smiles)

It's big. And I hope it’s also surprising. Just at the last Marvel retreat, Joe Quesada was looking at a print out of the first issue and when he turned the page with 616 Miles he smiled that good smile of one creator being impressed by another’s choice. He is my toughest critic so… I’m really looking forward to people’s opinion on this.

DF: The MU Miles reveal, as you have said, will be just the tip of the iceberg for this adventure. What can you tell us about the storyline (apart from MU Miles) for this miniseries?

Brian Michael Bendis: Both Peter and Miles are at a very intense personal crossroads. The connection between them so unique, so unheard of, that just their interaction could send shock waves into each other’s lives for years to come. This really is a defining moment for the legacy of Spider-Man.

Also, we are introduced to Miles’ new girlfriend who is going to be a major player in the series going forward.

DF: Are we going to have a Claremont-esque “fighting shadows” adventure here or is there some designated big-bad(s)? Anyone/-thing you can clue us into without spoilers?

Brian Michael Bendis: I think the bad guys of this storyline and what they want and why they want it will be a very big surprise

DF: This interview is a tad Miles heavy, so shifting to Peter, who has and continues to undergo changes in his own comic book life: How would you say those changes make him different from the Peter (same guy, different circumstances) you wrote about in the first Spider-Men series? How did you cope with these changes as a writer?

Brian Michael Bendis: See, I have to be careful because I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything going on in Dan or Chip’s carefully planned books. But I think it is fair to say that Peter is going through a personal crisis unlike anything he has ever gone through before and what is going to happen in our series is going to exacerbate the situation.

DF: What’s it like working with Sara on this project? Tell us what she brings to the spider-table.

Brian Michael Bendis: I love working with Sara. She brings such life and spirit to every single character. Every single panel. When people comment about how much they love Miles or Ganke, what they are really saying is that they love Sara. I write the words but Sara gives them soul. Sara creates that look in their eyes that communicates truth.

DF: Brian, I would consider both Spider-Men “street heroes,” in a manner of speaking. Will we be seeing either or both in coming issues of Defenders?

Brian Michael Bendis: I agree. And yes.

DF: Finally, what will all this mean for Bug? <tik>

Brian Michael Bendis: Sucks to be Bug. <tik>

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Brian Michael Bendis for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Spider-Men II #1 from Marvel Comics hits stores July 12th!
