5
MINUTES WITH... JOHN CASSADAY
As
the current artist for Joss Whedon Astonishing X-Men series,
John Cassaday is no stranger to high profile work.
The fan-favorite
artist was recently commissioned by Dynamite Entertainment
to provide just one of the stunning covers on their all-new
Red Sonja series (#1 shipping in June), and man oh man, did
he turn in a beauty.
We talked briefly
with the artist about this exciting new work.
DF: To
whom did you look for artistic inspiration when composing
your cover piece?
JOHN CASSADAY: Oh, the usual gang of barbarian illustrators:
Frazetta, Windsor-Smith, all good stuff...
DF: Does
the character of Red Sonja conjure up any particular images
or convey any particular emotions to you as an artist?
JOHN CASSADAY: A book judged by the cover. Literally
and figuratively.
DF: John,
you primarily have done team work -- on superheroes, how does
working on a sole female piece like your Sonja piece differ
in your approach?
JOHN CASSADAY: In general, I prefer solo characters.
I don't know that I'd ever wanna be a hot-chick pin-up artist,
but it was fun for this time...
DF: Any
other projects to plug?
JOHN CASSADAY: Project: Superior.
