Sonja's first appearance in Conan #23 and it all begins in
Red Sonja #2 as part of a special preview! Best of all it's
40 pages with 7 new pages of story and art -- bigger than
issue # -- all for the same price of just $2.99 AND featuring
the premiere of Thulsa Doom!"
We took
a few minutes to catch up with one half of that writing team
- a new face on the comics scene - Luke Leiberman!
DF:
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
LUKE LIEBERMAN: I finished NYU Film school about 4
years ago, then came right out to LA to work for Stan Lee.
He made me a much better writer - I remember he called me
into his office at one point after reading a treatment I had
written and said "Luke, you have monsters - great there are
monsters, you have explosions, wonderful, fight scenes - big
fight scenes - great. I don't care about any of that, every
story has these things, they do not make the story unique.
WHO is this about? Tell me why I care about the character.
If I don't care about the character then I don't care what
happens to them."
I will
never forget this advice, it shifted my focus as a writer
onto Character, and gave a new center to my storytelling.
The character is paramount, their decisions drive the story.
I still
maintain close ties to POW!, and am developing some DVD feature
projects with, them but I am more independent these days and
have a lot of my own projects.
DF:
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS PROJECT AND RED SONJA?
LUKE LIEBERMAN: I was drawn to Sonja by the potential
of the character - I like characters that have not already
been completely defined, where I have an opportunity to really
sink my teeth in and create something cool and new - I am
a Howard enthusiast more than a purist. I believe that we
have only begun to explore the Hyborian Age.
DF:
DESCRIBE THULSA DOOM AS YOU SEE HIM. HOW DOES THIS INTERPRETATION
FIGURE IN WITH WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE? HOW WILL HE FIGURE IN
TO THE STORY OF RED SONJA AS A WHOLE?
LUKE LIEBERMAN: My biggest Film project right now is
Thulsa Doom, to which I have the rights. We have a heavy hitting
producing team, a couple of Academy Award nominated actors
attached, and a script in the works. I can't give any more
details right now, but suffice to say that we are working
towards a major studio feature and have a full head of steam.
We have
a bold new vision for this character and plan to bring him
back in a very Fresh and Big way. The film will take him back
to his origins which involve the destruction of Atlantis.
It is basically the Godfather meets Conan, exploring the paradox
of Doom's character and confronting the deep inner conflict
- oh and there will be monsters, explosions and fight scenes
of course!
The Sonja
Vs Doom Series I am writing with Peter [David] will introduce
the younger Thulsa, along with reintroducing the more familiar,
and older version. It will have some connection to the Conan
Film, as Doom will be interested in the "Riddle of Steel"
but beyond this we are forging into new territory.
Thulsa
is a fascinating and complex character, his horrible charisma,
his villainous sincerity. Thulsa Doom long ago sold his soul
for power - he knows what the moral choices are, he is just
beyond Good and Evil as it were.
The series
will also explore more of Sonja's past as Doom has set his
sites on Hyrkania itself, bringing Sonja back home to "set
the house in order" as it were.
DF:
WHAT OTHER PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE IN THE WORKS?
LUKE LIEBERMAN: Aside from what was already mentioned
I wrote an original graphic novel which I am producing through
Dynamite hopefully be out for Halloween.
Just
finished a Short HD film which will be traveling around the
US and Europe in HD FEST. I am writing a Pilot for television,
and I work with the Global Youth Action Network coordinating
media from over 200 countries for promotional purposes.
DF:
WHO ARE YOUR ARTISTIC (WRITING) INFLUENCES?
LUKE LIEBERMAN: My influences? Well Stan is obviously
the biggest because he actually taught me, but I am a huge
Kubrick and Kirosawa fan.
DF:
WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO? WATCHING? READING?
LUKE LIEBERMAN: I have a very large film collection
at home - I'm looking forward to "Revenge of the Sith", I
hang out with the Pandemic guys alot, they are working on
"Battlefront 2", so they have all seen SW 3 and recommended
it - and hey my name is Luke - do you know how many people
have told me that "they are my father?"
TV is
mostly the NBA playoffs these days, and John Stewart and South
Park every night.
World
History and geopolitics are a serious hobby for me, through
GYAN I talk to kids from all over the world from Iraq to Europe
to South America - I have always been a big Heinlein and Tolkien
fan but mostly I read non-fiction historical novels, biographies
that kind of thing, and I'm rereading the Art of War right
now - I read enough scripts for work.
